Expansion Strategies for Nasal Decolonization to Reduce Healthcare Associated Infections

Program Date/Time: Tuesday, March 31, at 1 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. CT

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), including CLABSI and MRSA bacteremia, remain critical patient safety priorities. This PSQH-hosted webinar will examine the clinical evidence and real-world implementation of nasal decolonization as a scalable, evidence-based intervention to reduce avoidable infections while increasing throughput and reducing costs.

The first segment features a case study from CHRISTUS Health, with insights from Charles Monney, System Director for Infection Prevention and Control for CHRISTUS Health. He will share the journey of leading to universal ICU nasal decolonization and the impact on CLABSI and hospital-onset MRSA Lab-ID bacteremia. Attendees will learn how CHRISTUS secured systemwide approval across 30+ ICUs by leveraging pilot data, executive alignment, and guideline-supported practices.

In the second segment, Connie Steed, MSN, RN, CIC, FAPIC, Infection Prevention Consultant, will review the clinical rationale for nasal decolonization, including the role of nasal carriage in transmission risk, evidence supporting nasal decolonization strategies, operational and financial benefits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss clinical rationale and evidence for nasal decolonization.
  • Describe strategies to effectively expand nasal decolonization programs to mitigate infection risk in hospitalized patients.
  • Identify operational and financial impact of HAI reduction.
