Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute Deploys Patient Safety Technologies from KARL STORZ Endoscopy America, LiveData

LiveData has announced that the company’s advanced patient safety platform, OR-Dashboard, has been deployed into production at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. The installation, which went ‘live’ early in May in all five of Saint Luke’s cardiac operating rooms, integrates information from critical clinical processes in the OR, enhancing overall workflow and focus on patient-centered care.

In combining the strengths of the OR1 suite from KARL STORZ Endoscopy America with LiveData OR-Dashboard, the system gives the surgical team a complete picture of what is going on in the operating room precisely as it is happening. The Saint Luke’s installation includes the latest LiveData innovation, Active Time Out, which automates the safe surgery checklists that are prescribed by the World Health Organization, the Joint Commission, and other healthcare groups.

The company’s flagship product, LiveData OR-Dashboard, presents essential information about the patient and surgical case to the entire OR team in real-time. OR-Dashboard integrates data from patient records, administrative systems, physiological monitors, and medical devices, and synchronizes the information with OR workflow. In OR1 suites, large wall-mounted screens or boom-mounted displays ensure that OR-Dashboard is visible to the whole team.

LiveData OR-Dashboard reinforces consistent adherence to safety protocols and helps to reduce surgical errors and complications in several key ways. Active Time Out (ATO) includes key safety steps for perioperative care that have been shown to significantly reduce complications and deaths from surgery, such as the surgical team confirming correct patient/procedure/site prior to first incision. ATO automatically records this safe surgical process and provides comprehensive follow-up reports for making and sustaining quality improvement.

“Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute has a worldwide reputation as a leading institution for research and treatment of cardiovascular disease,” noted Jeff Robbins, CEO at LiveData. “In addition to other technology innovations, Saint Luke’s is the first cardiac specialty hospital to deploy OR-Dashboard. We are proud to have been selected as an important element to help Saint Luke’s maintain their position of leadership.”

Saint Luke’s features one of the 10 largest heart transplant programs in the country. In 2011, a new 180,000-square-foot building to house Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute opened on the Hospital campus.

“When it comes to patient safety, you can never do enough. This information technology adds an extra layer of security for our patients,” said cardio-thoracic surgeon Michael Borkon, M.D., co-executive medical director, Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.

Other LiveData installations deriving benefit from ATO include East Cooper Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Active Time Out technology is now rolling out at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY, NY; Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA; and St. Joseph’s Mercy Medical in Ann Arbor, MI.

Saint Luke’s has had a history of innovation since 1882. In 2007, the faith-based non-profit healthcare organization celebrated the 125th year of its flagship hospital, Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. The hospital has earned national recognition for excellence in health care, ranking among “America’s Best” hospitals for heart, heart surgery, urology, and gynecology, according to U.S. News & World Report.
