Programs in Patient Engagement

With each issue of the PSQH eNews, our online event calendar is updated with new listings. In this case, two of three newly listed events are focused on the patient’s experience and both are worthy of special mention.

In October, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) offers The Patient Experience, a 2-day program designed to help hospital leaders make sure everyone at their organization is focused on “the person at the center of care.” The program emphasizes the patient’s care experience “including respect, partnership, shared decision making, well-coordinated transitions, and efficiency.” In addition to being the right thing to do, improving the patient’s experience may reward hospitals with better scores on HCAHPS and other patient satisfaction surveys.

As always, IHI offers an accomplished faculty, including Martha Hayward, IHI’s Lead for Public and Patient Engagement. Martha brings strong professional and personal experience with the healthcare system to her position at IHI.

In September, healthcare activists—consumers and professionals— will gather in Kansas City, Missouri, for a groundbreaking program. Partnership with Patients is the brainchild of Regina Holliday, an artist and patient-rights advocate. With non-monetary support from Cerner (use of a facility for the weekend) and the Society for Participatory Medicine (patient travel scholarships) Regina has designed this conference with two missions: 1) to develop strategies for grassroots support for CMS’s Partnership for Patients and 2) to help patients network, learn, and grow as advocates and speakers focused on health policy. HealthCamp will help facilitate sessions and will host a program during the conference. Partnership with Patients has grown out of an unfortunate experience Regina had in May with CMS’s Partnership program (see my earlier blog post). The event in Kansas City is sure to be interesting, relevant, and at least somewhat “out of the box” even for those already involved in patient engagement.
