Medical Simulation Corporation Announces Stroke Quality Initiative Program in Support of National Stroke Awareness Month

Training demonstrates 61 percent increase in participants’ competence in early recognition and treatment of stroke patients.

Denver, CO, April 27, 2010—As the third leading cause of death in the United States, stroke affects 700,000 Americans and accounts for over 143,000 deaths annually. With timely treatment, the risk of death and disability from stroke can be substantially lowered. Released earlier this year, Medical Simulation Corporation’s (MSC) SimSuite Stroke Program enhances the competence and confidence® of healthcare providers in early recognition of stroke and initial treatment of stroke patients to improve patient outcomes.

In support of the national observation of Stroke Awareness Month in May (www.stroke.org), MSC has released new data demonstrating the effectiveness of its program. Stroke Program participants have demonstrated an average increase of 61% in tested knowledge of program objectives, from pre-course to post-course testing, and an average increase of 57% in consistency of test scores.

“MSC is proud to address a national health concern with the addition of the SimSuite Stroke Program to our growing menu of patient safety and quality-focused training options,” says Bill
Younkes, MSC President. “Participant training metrics have shown that our unique approach in blending simulation and traditional learning methods is making a genuine impact on increasing the confidence and competence of healthcare providers in treating stroke patients.”

The SimSuite Stroke Program is based on guidelines set by the American Stroke Association (www.strokeassociation.org) and conforms to The Joint Commission (www.jointcommission.org) standards in the “Urgent Care Assessment” domain within the Stroke Center Program. The complete SimSuite Stroke Program provides four hours of education that may help hospitals meet The Joint Commission’s requirements for employees who directly touch potential stroke patients.

MSC provides several options for healthcare providers to participate in the Stroke Program, including web-based learning, a comprehensive tool kit for facilities that own a human patient simulator, train-the-trainer services, and turnkey training solutions.
