Coastal Updates Training Programs as HIPAA Goes “HITECH”

Virginia Beach, VA, December 17, 2009 — Coastal has released eight HIPAA training programs that accommodate the new mandates of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act.

HIPAA: Do The Right Thing, HIPAA: Privacy Compliance, HIPAA: Privacy Compliance Scenarios, HIPAA: Privacy In Home Healthcare, HIPAA: Privacy In Long-Term Care, HIPAA: Security & Privacy For Home Healthcare, HIPAA: Security & Privacy In Long-Term Care and HIPAA: Security Compliance have been updated with the new and broadened patient right standards for business associates, data breach notification and marketing provisions.

The revised HIPAA programs explain how patients have been granted additional rights regarding PHI disclosures. They also describe how business associates
billing companies for instance are now subject to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Rule, including those on fines and penalties.

They identify a data “breach” and show how covered entities must respond to inappropriate and/or unauthorized use. Including citing the substantial and additional increases in penalties and defines whom those fines cover.

Moreover, the new programs review not only the changes due to the HITECH Act but also the basics of the HIPAA Privacy Rule. Covering the definition of PHIs; covered entities; PHI use and disclosure; authorization; authorization forms; the minimum necessary; privacy notices; patient rights; and the privacy rights of minors.

To help healthcare professionals cope with the changes, the programs also list general compliance guidelines, including the development of notices of privacy practices and the implementation of training programs, complaints processes, and safeguard procedures.
