Kevin Biese, MD
Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine (EM) and Internal Medicine – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine
Geriatric Emergency Departments (GEDs) are increasingly prevalent across the United States with over 420 GEDs currently accredited. Many health care systems have made GEDs a core part of their emergency care strategy to improve quality of care, census management, and their performance in value-based contracts. This course is presented by Dr. Kevin Biese, Chair of the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation program (https://www.acep.org/geda/), and Education and Dissemination Principal Investigator of the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (https://gedcollaborative.com). The course discusses the components of GEDs, implementation strategies, and return on investment of GEDs suited to the needs of varying health care systems.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the key characteristics of Geriatric Emergency Departments (GEDs).
- Examine the impact of GEDs on quality of emergency care delivered.
- Illustrate the return on investment of GEDs to hospitals and health care systems.

The Advanced Physician Advisor Board Certification (CPHYADV) validates professional expertise of US-licensed physicians serving in Physician Advisor roles throughout the integrated health care system.
The certification exam measures the enhanced knowledge of the Advanced Physician Advisor. Testing not only the basics, but practical application of concepts and skills used in everyday practice. The Advanced Physician Advisor board certification enhances the credibility of the physician advisor practicing today in health systems, hospitals, and ancillary facilities.

Health Care Quality & Management (HCQM) Certification demonstrates that ABQAURP Diplomates have the practical knowledge to reduce medical errors, ensure patient safety, eliminate waste and unnecessary services, while avoiding potentially harmful delays in care. Certification demonstrates to internal and external entities that you, your group practice, or hospital is accountable. The result is a safer, more efficient and cost-effective system that better satisfies the needs of patients, providers, purchasers, and payers.

Important Recertification Reminder
Attention Diplomates! We recommend completing your recertification early in your cycle instead of waiting until the deadline to recertify. The recertification cycle is 2 years, with the member’s initial recertification cycle beginning on October 1st, after passing the exam, and ending on September 30th of the second year.

CHCQM Recertification:
Complete a minimum of eight (8) CME / CE credit hours of continuing education as relevant to the fields of Health Care Quality and Management per two-year recertification cycle*.

CPHYADV Recertification:
Complete a minimum of 20 CME / CE credit hours of continuing education as relevant to the field of Physician Advisory per two-year recertification cycle*.
ABQAURP automatically reviews all Diplomate member records to determine if the requirements have been fulfilled. As members accumulate hours of continuing education, ABQAURP updates the recertification period for two (2) years if all requirements are met. Since the continuing education requirement is intended to keep members current with emerging trends and technologies, excess hours cannot be applied to the next recertification cycle. An updated Diplomate certificate will be sent automatically to the renewing members within eight (8) weeks of fulfilling the recertification requirements.
If a Diplomate has achieved both CHCQM and CPHYADV credentials, credit hours earned may be applied to both recertification requirements, as applicable to the content area* and recertification cycles of the two credentials.
