Drug Delivery System Protects Patient Safety, Enhances USP <797> Compliance
DUPLEX® Drug Delivery System, available for use with three generations of cephalosporins and the only ready-to-use IV drug delivery system available for CeFOXItin therapy in the United States, is designed to reduce the potential for medication errors, facilitate accurate dosing and inventory tracking, and help pharmacists and clinicians comply with JCAHO and USP <797> Guideline specifications stating medicines should be dispensed in their "most ready-to-use form."
"DUPLEX® provides hospitals across the country with a simple, ready-to-use formula for critical antibiotic therapies, enabling caretakers to provide the highest standard of care for their patients," said Rick Williamson, director of marketing, drug delivery, B. Braun Medical Inc. "DUPLEX® reduces the potential for medication dosing errors with a unique barcode technology that references final admixture, can be used to automate patient charting, and is designed to fit into medication dispensing systems to track inventory and facilitate reimbursement."
The DUPLEX® Drug Delivery System is a closed system to ensure sterility and dose accuracy. It consists of a pre-filled, PVC-, DEHP-, and latex-free IV container that includes accurate doses of drug and diluent in different compartments, separated by a quick release seal. There are no vials to attach or activate, and there is no possibility of delivering the diluent without the drug. Prior to activation, it can be stored at room temperature for up to 18 months and does not require a thawing process.
"With DUPLEX®, patients receive the right medication when they need it without the complications associated with frozen or mixed solutions," said James Abberton, M.S., R.Ph., director of pharmacy, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New York. "The ready-to-use packaging and extended storage capacity of DUPLEX® reduces preparation time, providing our staff added flexibility for distribution and administration, and is also a real economic benefit for the hospital."
B. Braun offers a broad range of intravenous cephalosporin antibiotic therapies for the hospital and outpatient settings, covering the first three generations of cephalosporins: Cefazolin, CeFOXItin, CefuROXIme and CefTRIaxONE.

MEDHOST And The Sullivan Group Partner To Provide Emergency Departments With Integrated Risk Management
MEDHOST, provider of the leading Emergency Department Information System (EDIS), today announced its partnership with The Sullivan Group (TSG), whose risk management will aid MEDHOST in revolutionizing patient safety in emergency departments (ED) nationwide.Ý By combining MEDHOST's easy-to-use EDIS with TSG's matrix of commonly missed medical conditions, Customers will see increased accuracy in patient diagnoses, treatments, and interventions.
Each year, hundreds of thousands of medical malpractice lawsuits are filed against healthcare facilities and practitioners, many of which could be prevented if emergency care physicians were prompted to examine patients for specific, easily overlooked conditions.Ý TSG has introduced a new paradigm in medical risk and error reduction through a three-pronged approach that 1) identifies and educates practitioners regarding the causes of medical errors and adverse patient outcomes, 2) builds that critical information into intelligent medical record tools for use real-time during the patient encounter, and 3) provides feedback to the entire healthcare team regarding key risk and safety indicators.Ý TSG's groundbreaking bedside risk management platform flags the most common high-risk patient complaints and prompts ED clinicians to check for serious medical conditions when these complaints arise.Ý
Ý"In the ED, physicians and nurses often work in a chaotic environment and are faced with a wide range of medical complaints and disease entities," said Dan Sullivan, president and CEO of TSG.Ý "While these clinicians are all well-trained, it can be easy to overlook a symptom or forget a possible diagnosis in the fast-paced ED environment.Ý TSG's risk and safety solutions non-obtrusively assist clinicians to consider the appropriate differential diagnoses, document the relevant exam, follow evidence-based and best practice guidelines, maintain constant awareness of a range of critical physiologic abnormalities, support the ED team process, and provide a broad range of key clinical information and alerts when needed.
"Our partnership with TSG allows MEDHOST to revolutionize risk management in the ED," said Craig Herrod, president and CEO of MEDHOST.Ý "By embedding TSG's comprehensive risk management content directly in our intuitive EDIS, we are providing our customers with seamless clinical decision support, an important step toward changing the way emergency medicine is practiced."
