Humedica Releases Real-Time Clinical Surveillance Solution Designed to Improve the Quality and Safety of Patient Care

Provides health care providers with vital and real time patient-level information to help reduce preventable complications and improve operational performance.

Boston, MA, January 6, 2010 — Humedica, a next-generation clinical informatics company, has announced the official release of Humedica MinedStream™, a real-time and predictive clinical surveillance solution. This software-as-a-service (SaaS) product has been designed to help health care organizations improve the quality and safety of patient care. Humedica MinedStream should improve health care organizations’ financial performance by reducing the number of preventable complications and ensuring compliance with performance measures, such as the Core Measures of The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals.

Humedica MinedStream complements Humedica’s current suite of products, which includes Humedica MinedShare™, an innovative solution that enables robust clinical, operational and financial benchmarking and comparative analytics. Christus Health System, which includes more than 40 hospitals and facilities in six U.S. states and Mexico, was one of the first hospital systems to implement Humedica MinedShare in the fall of 2009. Christus is also an early adopter of Humedica MinedStream.

“We recently rolled out Humedica MinedStream as a complement to Humedica’s retrospective comparative analytic tool, Humedica MinedShare,” said Eileen Sampanes, MBA, RN, system senior director for Quality and Patient Safety, Christus Health. “Humedica MinedStream tested extremely well, successfully identifying 100% of the acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients using Humedica’s predictive algorithms. This solution offers our providers the opportunity to accurately identify high-risk and high-cost patients and intervene while the patient is under the care of a particular facility to positively impact clinical outcomes and Core Measure performance. This allows us to move quickly from a retrospective review, which is often provided too late to impact a result, to a more real time intervention that will greatly improve the individual patient’s outcome.”

Essential patient data often remain trapped in disparate information systems within our nation’s health care organizations, not in the hands of those who need it most: health care providers. Humedica MinedStream puts vital patient-level information in the hands of clinicians while patients are still in the hospital receiving care. This enables clinicians to intervene quickly to improve clinical outcomes and patient care during a hospital stay, preventing unnecessary errors and costly mistakes. Humedica MinedStream is a real-time predictive clinical surveillance tool that identifies high-risk, high-cost patients, tracks necessary care and supports clinicians as they intervene to improve care. This allows hospitals and medical groups to enhance operational performance, reduce organizational cost and optimize payer reimbursement. Key product benefits include:

  • Compresses the “time to intervention” and allows clinicians to take action before the opportunity to improve patient care has elapsed;
  • Reduces costly preventable complications and consequently, improves financial performance;
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission’s Core Measures;
  • Reduces patient morbidity and mortality;
  • Allows users to automate the identification of patients to be tracked;
  • Prioritizes physician effort and workflow, improving operational and financial performance; and
  • Offers a simple and intuitive dashboard that offers real-time patient status updates.

“Humedica MinedStream equips our clinicians with the information they need to make informed decisions while the patient is in the care setting. Humedica MinedStream will have a tremendous impact on the quality of the care delivered throughout Christus facilities,” said Dr. John Gillean, chief medical officer, Christus Health. “Humedica MinedStream’s advanced data-driven predictive analytics and modeling techniques are invaluable to our organization as they quickly and accurately identify which hospital-based patients are at risk for preventable complications, which patients are in The Joint Commission’s Core Measure denominator, and what processes and procedures need to be completed to care for these patients effectively. We see these capacities as critical to our aggressive quality and safety agenda.”

“Potentially preventable complications are a significant concern for hospital executives, government officials and patients alike and are estimated to add nearly 10% to hospital inpatient costs, representing an $88 billion issue for our nation’s hospitals.” said Michael Weintraub, president and CEO of Humedica. “With Humedica MinedStream, we are providing hospitals with essential access to real-time and accurate patient-level information, which is the key to reducing these costly and dangerous preventable complications and improving the quality and safety of care delivered in our nation’s hospitals.”
