Missouri Center for Patient Goes National

Patient safety is an ever increasing focal point for improving efficacy and efficiency in the U.S. healthcare system, across all provider settings. Now the Missouri Center for Patient Safety (MOCPS) is poised to share its mission across the country.

“Today, reinforcing our broad-ranging vision that is applicable outside the borders of Missouri, we expand our outreach by offering patient safety resources and services nationally,” said executive director Becky Miller. “The Center’s vision remains ‘a healthcare environment safe for all patients and healthcare providers, in all processes, all the time.’ Now we expand this vision with a focus across the country.”

National health reform efforts have put the issue of patient safety, including Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) front and center. Even before its passage, and particularly following the 1999 landmark “To Err is Human” report, healthcare providers nationwide were looking at ways to improve healthcare quality, and reduce patient harm and financial costs of medical errors.

“Whatever the law of the land is, Americans need to know their healthcare system embraces a patient safety culture and seeks ways to continuously provide safe care,” Miller said.

The Center for Patient Safety (CPS) comprises three primary arms: general PSO services; EMS PSO services; and broad-ranging safety improvement resources–for hospitals, clinics, private practice, EMS, and other providers on the front lines of the nation’s healthcare system:

  • Training and education
  • Safety culture resources and services
  • Speakers bureau
  • Annual conference
  • Safety reports and alerts

“At CPS we’ve been proud to play a role in patient safety efforts close to home and regionally,” Miller said. “We’ve reached a point where we see our expertise contributing to the larger conversation and changes underway in health care settings around the country.”
