Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare: Business News
Saniguard® Antimicrobial Products to Help Safeguard Patients and Staff at St. Rita's 'Medical Center of the Future'

Lakewood, NJ, Dec. 1 More than 1,000 Saniguard® antimicrobial protected plumbing and hardware items (http://www.saniguard-online.com) from Component Hardware Group (CHG - http://www.componenthardware.com) will augment the cutting-edge patient and staff safeguards planned for a 10-story patient tower under construction at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio. The unique Saniguard products, which utilize a silver ion formulation from AgION Technologies and a proprietary powder coating material to inhibit the growth of bacteria and help halt the spread of infection, will protect a broad range of surfaces that are routinely touched by multiple patients and caregivers.
Controlling the spread of microorganisms is a critical issue in healthcare facilities worldwide. St. Rita's, a 437-bed hospital and Level 2 trauma center with 4,000 employees, physicians and volunteers, ranks very highly in benchmark comparisons with hospitals across the country, due in part to a strong Infection Prevention and Control department. For the new, state-of-the-art patient tower, Saniguard antimicrobial-treated faucets and faucet handles, door handles and push plates, restroom grab bars and door lock sets will be installed.
"Saniguard products are clearly unique, and specifying these products in what we think of as The Medical Center of the Future is a proactive measure one additional level of protection against the spread of infectious diseases that will take us to the top percentile in the nation," says Ron Connovich, director of facilities and construction services at St. Rita's. "I was skeptical when our architect recommended Saniguard products, but when we read case studies and lab reports and learned that the silver ion technology actually inhibits the spread of microorganisms, we returned the products we had ordered from another manufacturer and ordered Saniguard," Connovich adds. "The cost of using Saniguard products in place of ordinary products was insignificant in the overall cost of the project, and as we do cosmetic upgrades and renovations on the existing hospital, they will become a standard feature throughout St. Rita's."
