U.S. Hospital IT Data Released by the Dorenfest Institute

The Dorenfest Institute for Health Information Technology, Research and Education, managed by the HIMSS Foundation, has released several research reports on the U.S. health information technology market and updated 2005 data from HIMSS Analytics database (derived from the Dorenfest IHDS+ Database).

The Dorenfest Institute provides a variety of detailed historical data, reports, and white papers about information technology (IT) use in hospitals and integrated healthcare delivery networks at no charge to universities, students under university license, U.S. governments (local, state and federal), and governments of other countries that will be using the data for research purposes.

The Annual Report of the US Hospital IT Market, now available in .PDF format on The Dorenfest Institute Web site, presents the state of the US hospital IT market. The report examines hospital budgets as well as financial, technology, and department environments and presents key finding on IT investment and enterprise resource planning. The data is from HIMSS Analytics Database (derived from the Dorenfest IHDS+ Database).

Two white papers, The Clinical Systems Hospital IT Market, 1998-2005, and The Financial Systems Hospital IT Market, 1998-2005, have been developed for The Dorenfest Institute and made available on this Web site. The Clinical Systems report surveys each of the 12 applications associated with the clinical systems arena such as abstracting, chart deficiency, clinical decision support, and pharmacy management information systems. The Financial Systems report surveys 12 of the common applications within the financial systems arena, such as accounts payable, benefits administration, and electronic claims. Both reports offer an application by application view of the market, with changes in installation rates, key vendors for each application, and a summary of key issues related to that particular application.

The newly released 2005 data from the HIMSS Analytics database covers IT use in hospitals and integrated healthcare delivery networks. The release of the 2005 data expands the current library of the Dorenfest 3000+ Databases and Dorenfest Integrated Healthcare Delivery System Databases for the period 1986 through 2004, as well as many publications on IT use in the healthcare industry during that same time period.

"These updated market reports and data, along with the legacy of the Dorenfest healthcare IT databases, support the critical research that is needed to improve outcomes from healthcare IT investment projects," said Sheldon I. Dorenfest, president/CEO of the Dorenfest Group in Chicago. The Dorenfest Group is a leading consultant and source of knowledge about the healthcare information technology industry.

The Dorenfest Institute was formed in January 2005 to further the interest in and benefits associated with ongoing research in health IT. This followed a generous donation of his company and its historical data assets to HIMSS Foundation by Dorenfest to further the interest in and benefits associated with ongoing research in health IT.

"The HIMSS Foundation is pleased to continue its support of research in health IT with the release of this new data," said R. Norris Orms, CHE, executive director of the HIMSS Foundation. "As the industry continues to work toward the adoption of interoperable electronic health records, The Dorenfest Institute has given academic researchers and government agencies throughout the world opportunities to learn about and improve the application of information technology and management systems in healthcare."

The complete listing of databases and publications available from the Dorenfest Institute is available at http://www.himss.org/DorenfestInstitute/default.aspx, including an online registration form for access to all of the data.
