Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare: Product News
Sandel Medical Introduces Stand-Up-and-Count™ Sponge Counter

Chatsworth, CA, August 20, 2007 Sandel Medical Industries, the leader in safety solutions for patients and healthcare workers, today announced the introduction of the Stand-Up-and-Count™ Sponge Counter, a product that facilitates the containment and tracking of used sponges in the operating room.
The Stand-up-and-Count fits over a single basin ring stand, and can be used with or without a basin. It is made of clear plastic with individual numbered pouches to aid visual sponge counting. Each side has 5 self-closing pouches to confine soiled sponges.
Sponge counting is a mandatory operating room procedure to prevent retained sponges inside a patient's body. Such errors can lead to injury and death with resultant legal action. Studies have identified sponges as the items most commonly retained in patients' bodies, with over 75% of sponge counts falsely deemed correct. However, there is no universal procedure for sponge counting.
"Industry statistics and the feedback we receive from nurses in the field demanded an answer to sponge counting. That why we developed the Stand-Up-and-Count™," said Lucy Reday, Product Manager for Sandel Medical. "Sponges stay off the floor and are automatically counted in numbered pouches. That means less strain and more efficiency in the OR, and most importantly, more patients protected from surgical mishaps."
