JCR Introduces New
Consulting Service

Oak Brook, IL, August 20, 2007 — Joint Commission Resources (JCR) announces the launch of the Multi-Drug-Resistant Organism (MDRO) consulting service. This is a new service to help health care organizations prevent and control MDROs. JCR is a not-for-profit affiliate of The Joint Commission.

This consulting service recognizes the impact of MDROs on patient safety, as well as the economic toll of health care-associated infections. More than 70 percent of the bacteria that cause infections for two million hospitalized Americans each year are resistant to at least one of the drugs most commonly used to treat them, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Joint Commission Resources' consultants will assess an organization's risks and capacity to address MDRO prevention, and use evidence-based processes to implement sustainable changes. The goals of the service are to reduced MDRO infection rates, improve patient safety, lower operational costs and increase consumer confidence. The framework for JCR's MDRO consulting service is based on guidelines from leading organizations including the CDC, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and The Joint Commission.

The official launch of the new program coincides with JCR's annual Infection Prevention and Control Conference "Meeting, Exceeding and Succeeding," August 20 and 21 in Chicago. The conference brings together infection control professionals from across the country to learn new strategies for addressing issues such as MDROs and public reporting of health care-associated infection rates.
