St. Mary's Hospital of Michigan Celebrates Highly Successful Eclipsys Medication Management Activation

Expanded use of sunrise enterprise clinical solutions creates true, integrated environment to promote enhanced clinical decision support, patient safety and outcomes.

Atlanta, March 23 — Eclipsys Corporation® (NASDAQ: ECLP), The Outcomes Company®, today announced that St. Mary's of Michigan (St. Mary's), a member of Ascension Health, is one of the most recent Eclipsys clients to successfully activate the Sunrise Pharmacy™ medication management solution. The on-time implementation, which came in under budget, replaces legacy pharmacy technology and augments St. Mary's use of Eclipsys' Sunrise Enterprise™ clinical solutions for electronic medical records (EMRs). The new pharmacy solution creates a closed-loop integrated medication management environment in support of efficient, safe dispensing of medications within the hospital pharmacy and at the bedside.

"The Eclipsys pharmacy solution implementation has been a resounding success and our pharmacists quickly valued the usability and sophistication of the solution," said David Wanner, St. Mary's vice president and chief information officer. "The new system's design has added tremendous workflow benefits to the ecstatic pharmacy staff, which quickly uncovered 24 operational improvements. In addition, the instant messaging feature is enhancing communications between pharmacists and nurses. Everyone involved feels very positive about the improvements in quality and safety and working in a patient-centered environment."

According to Wanner, the medication management activation was virtually problem free and the transition from the old system to the newly installed Eclipsys electronic medication administration record (eMAR) occurred within 12 hours. "I conducted rounds the morning of the go-live and nurses were gathered around a terminal in awe of the new system," he said. "Perhaps my favorite comment was a nurse who popped into my office to say, 'This system is cool.'"

The eMAR is helping St. Mary's pharmacists to quickly enter, review and verify orders, and assist nurses in the safe dispensing of medications. The pharmacy solution is designed to help reduce adverse drug events by providing advanced clinical decision support for checking medication contraindications. With the recent medication management activation, St. Mary's has successfully leveraged its use of Eclipsys' Sunrise Clinical Manager™ integrated EMR, an enterprise-wide advanced information solution that provides the care team unified views to immediate, secure access to a patient's complete records in support of streamlined care processes and improved decision making at the point of care. The new eMAR adds an extra layer of continuity of care, safety and quality by creating a shared enterprise-wide view of all medications administered to a patient.

"We are pleased St. Mary's has joined a growing list of healthcare organization that realize the tremendous value of expanding their use of our solutions based on our newer and flexible integrated technology platform, embedded clinical content and advanced clinical decision support," said Jay Deady, Eclipsys executive vice president, Client Solutions. "With integrated pharmacy functionality a part of CCHIT 2009 certification and possibly a stimulus requirement as well, St. Mary's is well prepared and ahead of the curve."
