Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center Implements Mediware's ClosedLoop™ Medication Management Suite

LENEXA, KS, April 16, 2008 Mediware Information Systems Inc., announced today that Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre in British Columbia has adopted Mediware's WORx 'Closed-Loop' Medication Management system. Abbotsford and other hospitals throughout North America are turning to Mediware's 'Closed Loop' Solutions to improve the efficiency of medication management from order to administration to reduce potential for costly medication errors.
Published studies have reported some 700,000 adverse drug events occur every year and one in five medication doses administered in hospitals are given erroneously. Mediware's 'Closed-Loop' suite delivers an integrated data management solution that connects doctors, nurses and pharmacists with real-time information and documentation capabilities to dramatically reduce error possibilities. The suite consists of four modular components that leverage a single database to form a closed-loop.
According to John Damgaard, Mediware's senior vice president and chief operating officer, medication management processes have come under scrutiny as hospitals continue to struggle with time-consuming and sometimes inaccurate data collection and transmission. Mediware's seamless, closed-loop approach links the core components of the medication-use process.
"From prescribing to dispensing, to administration and documentation, each care provider is connected to a single source of information that gives real-time notification of the patient's status," Damgaard said. "In addition to centralizing the entire medicine management process in one database, another major benefit of the closed-loop approach is complete elimination of manual and handwritten processes, a major source of medication errors."
