Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare: Business News
OUTCOME Enables Hospitals to Meet the Requirements of MassHealth P4P Initiaitive

Hospital pay-for-performance solution created to improve quality measures in Massachusetts Hospitals.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, January 7, 2008 Outcome Sciences, Inc. (OUTCOME), the leading provider of patient registries and studies for evaluating real-world outcomes, today announced that it has created a Patient Management Tool (PMT®) to support the MassHealth Hospital Pay-for-Performance (P4P) Measures initiative. In an effort to improve hospital quality in Massachusetts, MassHealth recently implemented Hospital P4P Measures that will improve the standard of care based on specific performance benchmarks. The measures of focus include obstetrics, neonatal, pediatric asthma care, surgical infection prevention, community acquired pneumonia, and health disparities.
OUTCOME's newly designed MassHealth Hospital P4P PMT® is a single entry tool that minimizes reporting time and includes the MassHealth required measures, as well as CMS and Joint Commission Core Measure data collection forms, allowing hospitals to collect data for multiple initiatives in one system. The MassHealth Hospital P4P PMT has been built on OUTCOME's web-based platform for hospital quality measurement, which is currently used in more than 2,000 U.S. hospitals nationwide. This PMT can be used to collect and transmit data to MassHealth for their upcoming 2007 data submission deadline on May 15, 2008.
"Creating a set of best practices to improve the standard of care and quality is imperative for the future of both hospitals and healthcare in general," said Richard Gliklich, MD, president and CEO of OUTCOME. "We believe that MassHealth's decision to implement these measures will inspire other states to follow suit. Our PMTs are designed to help physicians easily adapt to changes in regulatory requirements and in healthcare technology, further ensuring more accurate data collection nationwide."
OUTCOME's MassHealth Hospital P4P PMT joins a suite of tools in the OUTCOME Total Quality™ web-based system, which includes a large number of inpatient and outpatient quality measurement modules across a range of therapeutic areas, such as stroke, heart failure, diabetes, myocardial infarction, pneumonia, orthopedics, pediatrics, and infections.
OUTCOME is the leading provider of patient registries, post-approval studies, quality improvement programs, and integrated technologies for evaluating real-world outcomes. Outcome provides services and technologies focused on evaluating the safety, effectiveness, and quality of healthcare products and services. The company has designed, developed, and managed more than 100 patient registries, including many of the largest and most well-recognized programs for disease outcomes and safety and risk management. Outcome is also an AHRQ DEcIDE Research Center, a component of AHRQ's Effective Health Care initiative. Outcome was selected by AHRQ to lead the effort to create the patient registries handbook "Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes: A User's Guide," published in May 2007. The work was performed under contract to Outcome through its role as an AHRQ DEcIDE Research Center. For more information, please visit www.outcome.com.
